Mobile Li-ion Battery Crushing & Recycling Equipment

Li-ion batteries mainly consist of casing, positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte and separator. The positive electrode is fabricated by coating lithium cobalt oxide powder on both sides of an aluminum foil current collector with PVDF binder. The negative electrode has a similar structure: carbon powder is bonded onto both sides of a copper foil current collector. Featuring high voltage, high specific capacity, long service life and zero memory effect, lithium-ion batteries have rapidly dominated the power supply market for portable electronic devices since commercialization, with annual output rising continuously.

Their service life is roughly 2 years. Improper disposal of spent Li-ion batteries poses potential environmental pollution risks, as they contain lithium hexafluorophosphate, carbonate organics, and heavy metals such as cobalt and copper. On the other hand, spent Li-ion batteries contain valuable resources including cobalt, lithium, copper and plastics, which carry high recycling value. Scientific and effective treatment of spent Li-ion batteries therefore delivers remarkable environmental benefits alongside favorable economic returns.

Copper accounts for approximately 35% of the Li-ion battery negative electrode and serves as a widely used vital industrial raw material. The carbon powder adhered to copper can be applied as additives for plastics, rubber and other products. Effective separation of constituent materials from spent battery anodes promotes resource recovery of waste Li-ion batteries and mitigates corresponding environmental hazards.

Common resource recovery technologies for spent Li-ion batteries include hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and mechanical-physical separation. Compared with hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, mechanical-physical methods require no chemical reagents and consume less energy, making them eco-friendly and highly efficient. Based on the structural characteristics of Li-ion battery negative electrodes, a combined process of crushing-screening and air classification is adopted for separation and enrichment research, enabling high-efficiency separation and recovery of copper, aluminum and carbon powder from spent battery anodes.

Working Principle

Based on the structure of Li-ion battery positive and negative electrode processing equipment and the material properties of copper and carbon powder from electrode materials, a combined process of hammer vibration crushing, vibrating screening and air classification is applied to separate and recover constituent materials from spent Li-ion battery negative electrodes.

Indoor LED Screen Advantages

  • The combined process of hammer vibration crushing, vibrating screening and air classification realizes resource utilization of metallic copper and carbon powder from spent lithium-ion battery anode materials.

  • Hammer vibration crushing effectively peels carbon powder off copper foil in anode materials. Subsequent vibrating screening based on particle size and shape differences achieves primary separation of copper foil and carbon powder.

  • For crushed particles with a size of 0.125~0.250 mm and low copper grade, air classification can efficiently separate copper from carbon powder. Optimal recycling performance is obtained at an air velocity of 1.00 m/s.

  • This equipment is mainly applied by lithium-ion battery manufacturers to separate aluminum foil, copper foil and electrode materials from scrapped positive and negative electrode sheets for recycling. The complete set operates under negative pressure to prevent dust leakage, with a separation efficiency of over 90%.
